SPECIAL OP #1: Stop Storm Water Runoff!

THE PROBLEM:
Long Island’s street storm drains, from as far north as Old Country Road, lead directly to the South Shore. Rainwater, and the litter and pollutants it picks up along the way, is deposited UNFILTERED into our waterways. Typical items swept up in this storm water include street litter, plastic bottles, bottle caps, cigarette lighters, cigarette butts, Styrofoam cups and food containers, lawn chemicals and fertilizers, oil and gasoline, asbestos dust from brake linings, and dog waste. This pollution is not only unsightly, but it is also a large danger to marine and human life. Asbestos levels are extremely high in the waterways along the Meadowbrook Parkway. Entire populations of crabs, clams, seahorses and filter feeders along these waters have been wiped out.

PART OF THE SOLUTION

Operation SPLASH has been instrumental in:

  1. Increasing government awareness of this problem on local, county and state levels

  2. Spearheading an initiative to install sewer inserts to trap litter and filter out pollutants

(NOTE: we have already seen a return of marine life where these filters are being used!)

  3. Installation our own debris trap at Old Mill Creek, which has stopped more than 850 barrels of litter from entering Freeport Creek

  1. Installation of hundreds of sewer decals to inform the public that sewers lead to our bays

  2. Providing free educational presentations of the dangers of storm water runoff
